Buddha: While Buddha is a name commonly applied to the prince of the Sakyas- Siddartha, the term Buddha means "The awakened one". This is not a personal name, indeed according to
the buddhist tradition, a Buddha has appeared from time to time throughout human history, and will continue to do so. About the year 250 BC. certain developments occurred in buddhism that led to contact with hellenized culture.
This had an impact on buddhism. One result may have been the development of the devotional art form, the Buddha statue. Until this time there had been no plastic representation of the Small Hydrocal Buddha It was around
the time of the contact between Buddhism and the Mediterranean culture in north-western India that the use of the Buddha-rupa or Buddha image, seems to have begun. Some of the early sculptures of the Buddha are standing figures
which are remarkably similar to the sculptures found in Greece of Apollo. |
