The Pastel

The pastel, contrary to the watercolours, is a dry system of coloration with the help of little sticks of an infinite range of colours which allow to move smoothly from one shade to another.

The technique is based on the utilization of the thumb or of a little piece of rolled paper.

This practice of the stump-drawing has espacially been used by the portrayers as LEBRUN, de la FOSSE and QUENTIN de LA TOUR.

Some other famous pastelists have to be mentioned: DELACROIX, MONET, RENOIR and DEGAS who used this technique to paint his little dancers.

Today it isn't very often used by the artists but I propose it to you because this way of expression allows me to give back all the shades and lights I see in the landscapes.
