The Haut-Fays Geocache - GPS Stash
Hunt
The Haut-Fays geocache was placed on July 6, 2000.
Il was visited for the first time on July 16. Here is the story that Geert sent:
Hello Pierre,
yesterday (sunday, 16/07/2000) I visited your stash in Haut-Fays.
I was borred that day and decided to get out of the house. Remembering
there are some stashes in Belgium, I looked up the info on internet and
saw that the stash in Haut-Fays was in my reach (I live in Gent). I left
here in Gent around 15h00 and arrived around 16h45. The weather was
really terrible : rain, rain and rain ! I parked my car on the small
road going south were you have the tree-plantage. I then went into the
forest on the opposite side and tried locating the stash but my GPS was
always auto-averaging (it's a Magellan 315, and you can't switch off
auto averaging) so it did not work like that. My second strategy was as
follows : I started walking along the road (so the GPS would not
average) and looked at the TRN (turn-indicator) until it reached 90°
(the stash-position was my GOTO). There I entered the forest and
immediately found the stash at the roots of the tree, as indicated. By
that time it was 17h30.
It's very satisfactory to drive 180 km and really find what you are
looking for. Even in this terrible rain ! I wrote my comments in the
logbook, took out the anti-stress ball and placed a pluche reindeer in
it (around 8 cm in height). I got this as a Christmas gift in a
'Spector' photo shop some years ago with the development of a film. I
also did a 10 minutes average of the position and came to :
49°59.995N
05°00.007E
Altitude = 475 meters.
This means a distance of 12 meters from the 'official' stash position,
so well within the error of the GPS.
Unfortunately I was unable to take some pictures. I had my camera with me but NO film !
How stupid of me !
I made a small walk and returned home around 18h30.
All in all it was a nice trip.
Bye,
Geert.
