From 1940 onwards, the British admirality used small freighters specialized in the rescue of seaman to serve with the merchant convoys at sea. They discharged the other ships of the convoy and especially the overburdened escort ships from that dangerous task (that required to stop where the hunter was still lying). They were later equipped with Direction Finding Equipment, that allowed them to locate the radio emissions of the U-Boats and either avoid enemy concentrations or send submarine killers at the right place.
