Carrier battle
[Diagram by types of ship][Diagram by Task Groups]

Start: Sunday May 3, 1942 Ending: Monday May 4, 1942

One of the pincers of the Operation "Mo" was directed against the Solomon Islands. The Japanese landed there on May 3rd to set up a floatplane basis. The US answer came the next day with Fletcher's carrier strike, which inflicted losses to the unprepared Japanese. The action in itself is not decisive but it is the prelude to the Battle in the Coral Sea, fought a few days later.
