Click with the mouse to have an enlargementThinking that Kurita was out after the battle of the Sibuyan Sea, Halsey went north to destroy Ozawa's fleet. He almost succeeded in that, but he opened the way of Leyte to Kurita, who attempted the dash which would lead to Samar. Hearing of that encounter, Halsey detached first a reinforcedtask group to the south, and afterwards interrupted the chase altogether to support the ships around Samar. Before leaving, he detached a group of cruisers to finish the Japanese cripples in a gun battle.

The Japanese fleet at Cap Engano around half past one. The two visible carriers are the Zuikaku (center) and the Zuiho (background). Both were sunk in the afternoon by US planes.

Webmaster's question(s) and remark(s): Situation before sunrise. Cruisers and destroyers have been shuffled between Tasks Groups during the day. The number of planes is certainly not exactly the same over several days of fighting.
