The Taussig after World War II with a reinforced radar equipement. The three double turrets with 5'' guns are clearly visible on this picture.
The class Allen B. Sumner inaugurated the mounting of double 5" turrets to replace the single model of the Fletcher. It was a good idea, since it was also adopted in the the Gearing, the next class of destroyer. All units were launched between 1943 and the begining of 1945. None were cancelled.
Five ships were sunk before the end of the war, three of them by kamikaze. The Cooper was the last victim of the "long lance" torpedo of a Japanese destroyer, in the Philippines during a night combat at the end of 1944. The Sumner went on being used in the US and other Navies after the war. One of them, the Taussig was still in service in 1998.
Besides the 58 destroyers, 12 other ships of the same class were completed as fast minesweepers. They are listed in the class Robert H. Smith.
