Monograph of La Louvière - municipality of Haine-Saint-Pierre

Situation:

Hatred - John Dory is situated in 3.5 km of La Louvière, 5 km of Binche, 17 km of My.

Surface of the municipality: 500 hectares.
Population raised(found) before the fusion of the municipalities: 7256 inhabitants; at present, one counts 7437 inhabitants.

Average height is of 79.5 metres.
Hatred - John Dory is crossed by the Hatred.

Origin étymologique of the village seems evident to determine.
The first houses rose around the Hatred which pours into the village. The first part of our study étymologique can be so considered as explained. As regards the origin of "John Dory", one can explain it by the fact that the parish of the place is dedicated to the leader of the apostles, this is very common(current) in rural environment(middle) (examples: Mont-Sainte-Geneviève, Mont-Sainte-Aldegonde,).

Until 1138, the two villages of Hatred - John Dory and Haine-Saint-Paul were confused(merged) (and indicated(appointed) under " Hagna's " term); from this date, a net distinction appeared, indicating Haine-Saint-Paul as " Haina Poterie " and Hatred - John Dory in " Hayne-Sancti-Petri ".

Numerous archaeological searches(excavations) allowed to demonstrate that the territory of Hatred - John Dory was lived since the most put off times; indeed searches begun in 1804 allowed to update a deposit of cut flint dating period paléolithique. These vestiges are kept(preserved) in the Museum of the Park Léopold in Brussels.

The other searches(excavations) allowed to find tracks of the neolithic age due to the discovery of numerous polished flints.

The most considerable discovery results from the exhumation of a gallo-Roman cemetery in Jolimont's hamlet (searches(excavations) begun between 1903 and 1904). About fifteen urns funeral was updated (the custom of time was to cremate the deaths; this method returns bit by bit in the style of the day at present, as what fashion is well and truly eternal one resumption!); almost all are provided with their lids and accompanied with numerous vases of offerings in the most different forms. Besides these funeral objects, it is necessary to indicate two magnificent glass bottles blue, both kept(preserved) to Mariemont's museum. Fibules, coins in the effigy of Roman emperors, glass pearls, weapons, were also discovered(found).

As all the entities governed by the feudal system, Hatred - John Dory, was divided into different seigneuries.

Main clause was the seigneury of Hatred which regrouped the fief of Hestre and that of Hatred. She(it) was consisted of a castle provided with a chapel, which was near the palace of Mariemont, numerous plots of land, farms and a mill. This seigneury raised(found) counts of Hainaut and carried(wore) the title of " Seigneury of Roy ". This ownership passed successively in the families Bonlez XIV-th, of Montigny ( 1475 ) and Carondelet. This family possessed seigneury until the abolition of the right(straight) feudal lords in the French Revolution.

Second seigneury depended on the earth(ground) of Houdeng-Aimeries and his(her) famous owner Nicolas Rolin. Seigneury passed in the hands of the families of Rolin XIV-th, Henin ( 1634 ), Hossart ( 1636 ), Brouwet ( 1745 ). The possessions of this seigneury consisted of a manor house and various lands of culture.

Redemont's fief was less vast and less powerful than the previous two seigneuries but counted, all the same, a house provided with dependences and of numerous bonniers of farmlands.

Besides these three seigneurial properties, existed the small seigneury of the Mat the old house of Romanic style of which was destroyed(annulled) at the beginning of 1900's.

Small dependences spread in the four corners(places) of the village belonged to the abbeys of Lobbes, Alder, Maid - hope and the Binche's John Dory hospital.

The territory of Hatred - John Dory knew a lot of bother and devastations due to various battles and absurd conflicts of feudal period and of the following one.

Several illustrious persons stayed in the village; let us quote for example, Louis XIV, who camped with the troops the day before Namur's assault in 1692; the Marshal of Luxemburg and his people raised(drew up) their tents to Hatred - John Dory after their Neerwinden's victory.

A local charter with Hatred - John Dory mentions the existence of coalmines on the territory from 1410. In the XVIII-th century establish(constitute) two coalmining companies(societies): the Company(society) of the Collieries of Hestre and Hatred - John Dory created in 1755 and the Company(society) of the Collieries of Hestre so called by Redemont ( 1756 ). These two companies(societies) remained independently only 25 years; in 1782, they merged and took the name of Company(society) of Hestre and Hatred - John Dory.

In 1905, this company(society) merged with that of Houssu to give the new Corporation of the Collieries of Hatred - John Dory, Hestre and Houssu. Hardly six years later, this begun was dissolved and distributed between the other different companies(societies); the concessions of Hatred - John Dory were resumed by Mariemont-Bascoup's Inc..

Coalmining activity stopped in the village in 1944.

But the fame of Hatred - John Dory does not come from its coalmining industry, the main industrial incomes of the village result from his(its, her) numerous iron industries and from metal constructions (let us quote, for example, forges, Factories and Foundries of Hatred - John Dory, Balm and Marpent, the Central Company of Construction,).

The most famous industry of the village stays, doubtless, activity window (the Deschuytener glass factory(glass-making) is the first in activity in Hainaut's county, by 1780).

Regrettably, most of these industries disappeared.

In the point of view of transport, Hatred - John Dory is known for the important station of forming(training); we shall talk again of it farther.

Haine-St-Pierre's coats of arms. Armorial official of Belgium.

Weapons resumed with the village are those of the family Carondelet (holder of the seigneury of Hatred - John Dory and Hestre, from 1639 till 1784). They are of azure in the chief loaded(charged) golden band(strip) of a croissant of mouths and accompanied with six besants of gold put in orle. These coats of arms were recognized by the royal order of February 25, 1924.

The colours of Hatred - John Dory are the blue and the yellow.

The church John Dory of Hatred - John Dory.

Situation:

Church St-Pierre to Haine-St-Pierre. Photo Places.

As we indicated him(it) in the explanation étymologique of the village, the village carries(wears) the patronymic of the saint honored with the parish. The church is so dedicated to the leader of the apostles and the first pope of the Roman Catholic Church.

The ancient(former) church John Dory was strong probably built at the beginning of XII-th century. It is at this moment, let us call back(remind) it, that was established a distinction between two Saint Paul's parishes and John Dory; this distinction implying two separate places of cult. It(he) reached us only too much not enough information about the primitive building to be able to make a study of it deepened(fathomed). The only known elements allow us to say that seen the state of too much advanced(moved) decay so that a simple restoration is enough, one demolished the primitive church in 1779 to reconstruct other one of it.

The new church was built in 1782 supervised by the abbot of Alder Joseph Scribbe. The coats of arms of the abbot builder are engraved on the stone round arch(hanger) of the door of the church.

The church John Dory is of semi-classic style.

Numerous gravestones decorate the inside of the building. Monuments participate also in the internal decoration, let us quote for example, the monument dating 1759 calling back(reminding) the memory of Jean-François Hossart and Anne-Marie Philipart, it(he) is engraved by a bottom - relief of Saint François of Sat(based).

The ancient(former) railway station of Hatred - John Dory.

Situation:

Street of the Station.

Haine-St-Pierre's station. Photo Places.

The station did not always occupy the place which it occupies today.

The first station was situated near the hamlet of Balm and carried(wore) the same name; this station had been built in 1848 to harm(serve) the line La Louvière-Bascoup; it was closed down in 1860, during the creation of the second station of Balm. The situation of this second station was more or less similar to the place of the current station.

The qualifier of " station of Hatred - John Dory " was used for the first time in 1866.

A third station replaced the previous one, it is the one that we can see at present by crossing the village. This last one in summer built in 1885-1886. Until the permanent closure in 1982, the station of Hatred - John Dory was an important knot ferrovière and counted a big station of forming(training).

The stop(ruling) of use of the station is due to the creation of a new station ferrovière in some hundred metres from there, it is the station of La Louvière-Sud.

The site was acquired(bought back) with the municipality of La Louvière in 1985. This one renewed buildings(ships) and since 1989, they shelter one of three antennae of the Regional Museum of man and the environment of the Centre dedicated to the Interpretation of the Construction and Life ferrovière (the two other antennae are situated in the Chapel of Grande La Louvière and in Strépy's firm Delsamme; to see chapters relating to La Louvière and to Strépy-Bracquegnies).

The Centre of Interpretation of the Construction and the Life ferrovière shelters permanent exhibitions. In the former(old) two waiting rooms, one can show panels explicatifs redrawing the historic and the evolution of the construction ferrovière, tables(pictures) redrawing the typical day of a railroad employee, the former(ancient) tools for rail is exposed(explained) as well as mockups of trains and stations...

Between two rooms, the former(ancient) newsstand and the room of counters(ticket offices) were fitted out in projection room accessible(approachable) to the public.

Besides this small museum giving evidence of rich economic and social past for Hatred - John Dory, a part of the premises of the station is occupied with the Circle of History Henri Guillemin, who contributes to the protection of the cultural and traditional patrimony by publishing numerous collections dedicated to the history and to the regional life.
