27 OCTOBER - The eruption starts with various effusive fractures on the South flank (towards Nicolosi) and north flank (towards Linguaglossa). 28 OCTOBER - The airport of Catania is closed because the fall down of an abundant ash volume on the S and SE slopes of Etna. The ash plume is pushed away towards South and reaches the Northern Africa coast. 29 OCTOBER - The tourist structures of Piano Provenzana are destroyed by lava. An earthquake (6 on the Mercalli scale) destroys the “rione of Bongiardo” in Santa Venerina. 05 NOVEMBER - Alarm of landslide in Presa, part of Piedimonte Etneo : the earthquakes have created a landslide with a 70 meters displacement at Monte Finocchio. 07 NOVEMBER - The effusive phase of the eruption is over on the N flank. 11 NOVEMBER - The ash emergency continues at the airport of Catania. Alitalia flights move from Fontanarossa to Reggio Calabria . 13 NOVEMBER - The strong emission of ashes begins again from the fracture located at 2,750 meters above sea level on the southern slopes. 19 NOVEMBER – A lava flow destroys part of the Pine forest of Ragalna 22 NOVEMBER – Lava moves towards the tourist zone of Sapienza. Alarm is maintained. 24 NOVEMBER - The area of the Sapienza shelter is evacuated while heavy works are going on to raise banks of protection around the tourist structures. Lava passes very close to the cable car station. 25 NOVEMBER – The lava flow slows down considerably. A new explosive vent appears at 2,800 meters of altitude a.s.l., on the north side to that standing at 2.750 m. of altitude. 27 NOVEMBER – A new lava flow moves towards the Pine forest of Milia and burns it. That forest is located between the villages of Biancavilla and Ragalna. 01 DECEMBER - The lava flow slows down while the alarm rate is lowered due to the decreasing of lava progression. 02 DECEMBER - Earth tremor occurs in Giarre, in the entity of Macchia, and damages the elementary school. 10 DECEMBER – A new effusive phase starts again creating another lava flow moving down towards the Sapienza shelter. 14 DECEMBER - The Italian airlines leave the Fontanarossa airport and move to Palermo. 16 DECEMBER – A new "lava" alarm for the Sapienza shelter. 17 DECEMBER – Explosion inside an electric power cabin close to the Sapienza shelter; 39 people were hurt. 18 DECEMBER – The lava flow crosses the provincial road 92. 22 DECEMBER – A new effusive vent opened at 2750 meters of altitude on the S flank.
