Germany Panther (Introduction) Germany

Type: Heavy tankNationality: Germany
Only the
Tiger can eclipse the fame of the Panther among the German tanks of World War II. Reaching the frontline almost a year after its elder cousin, it revealed itself as the most accomplished product of the German tank industry of the war. Despite a weight of almost 45 tons, it could easily top 50 kph on roads, placing itself in the same league as the much lighter T-34.
The Panther was the German answer to that T-34. Better armed, with an oblique and much more powerful armor, the German was way above its opponent. Facing the western Sherman, it was a terror. The Panther had handicaps too. It was mechanically too weak, what provoked many losses during retreats and diminished the number of available machines at crucial moments. Its weight made transferts and displacements difficult and costly and last but not least, his complexity dramatically limited the number produced (les than 6000, that is one for every seven T-34 and one for every eight Sherman. With odds at one vs. 15, despite all its qualities, it did not stand a chance).
