Germany Sturmgeschütz III (Introduction) Germany

Type: tank destroyerNationality: Germany
The idea of turretless tanks, specialized in the infantry support was born well before the war. Prototypes appeared already in 1937 on the chassis of a
Panzer III B. The concept was tested successfully in the frontline for the first time in France in 1940.
When new Russian tanks appeared on the stage in 1941 (T-34 and KV), they provoked a crisis among the German "Panzerwaffe": they had no vehicule powerful enough to knock out the newcomers at fighting distance. One of the solution adopted was to install a antitank weapon on the Sturmgeschütz and give them a new role: tank killer. They were so successful, that they went on being produced and used on a large scale until the end of the war.

The Russians reused some of the captured chassis of
Panzer III, Panzer IV and Sturmgeschütz III by putting their own gun in them.
That new weapon was first tested on the battlefield at Kursk against their ex-owners. Some were later recaptured by the Germans and once again pressed into service on their original side.
