The testing of the first model led to a second model with a somewhat modified suspension. Four pre-production models were needed, each time with a modified suspension, to get the definitive version of the Panzer III.
The first campaign they took part in was the invasion of Poland. In October 1940, five units were converted as prototypes for the new Sturmgeschütz.
