Version francophone
USA Sherman V USA

Type: Medium tankNationality: USA
The lack of engine Continental forced the American to use a Chrysler engine in the version M4A4 of the Sherman. This was in fact the aggregation of the five engines of automobiles ! To fit that cumbersome device, the hull of the tank had to be lengthened by 6 inch. Dubbed Sherman V by the British
Identification:
With its cast turret and welded hull, it is very similar to most of other sherman versions. Yet, it is possible to tell it apart thanks to the lengthened hull: the bogies are separated by two track elements (one in the previous models) and the idler is more to the rear of the tank. There is a projection on the engine top behind the turret, more on the rear than on the models
M4 and M4A2.
The M4A4 was the sole Sherman series which kept a front hull with three parts bolted together, while the last models of all other series exchanged it for an unique cast piece in the course of the production.

Early production model of the M4A4. Notice the front protection in three bolted pieces. All other series ended up with a unique cast piece whereas the M4A4 retained that layout.
