USA Lee/Grant (Introduction) USA

Type: Medium tankNationality: USA
The Lee/Grant (the nickname were of British origin. The official US designation being "Medium Tank M3") is the first US medium tank to be used in operation since World War I.
Having no experience of a revolving turret with a 7.5 cm gun mounted inside, the Americans prefered to mount the main gun of their new Medium Tank in a sponson in the hull. In the above turret, there was only a 3.7 cm gun. That was, with the excessive height, the main weakness of this machine.
The first Grants to see action were those delivered to Great Britain and engaged against Rommel at Gazala in May of 1942. They were a nasty surprise for the chief of the Afrikakorps and they put him in a dire situation for several days.
The Grant took part in the campaign in North Africa until the end and were then transfered to less demanding areas, like Asia-Pacific, or were employed for second line tasks or training. The
Sherman, with its main weapon mounted on a fully revolving turret, was clearly superior to the Lee/Grant.
